Understanding Myopia: Symptoms and Causes

Myopia is a common eye condition, also known as nearsightedness. It happens when the cornea is excessively curved, or the eyeball is too lengthy. Because of this, light concentrates in front of the retina rather than on it. Myopia typically develops in childhood or adolescence and may worsen with age.


Common symptoms associated with Myopia include:

  1. Distant objects appear blurry.
  2. Squinting to see clearly.
  3. Headaches.
  4. Eye fatigue.

Here are some dietary tips to consider to maintain good eye health and protect the eyes from aging:

Eat a Diet Rich in Nutrients

Fresh fruits and vegetables are the best sources of antioxidant vitamins, which may protect against various age-related eye issues. Also, omega-3 fatty acids in fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel may assist. 

Avoid High-Glycemic Index Foods

High-glycemic index foods, such as processed carbohydrates and sugary drinks, can lead to inflammation in the body. Inflammation has been linked to an increased risk of myopia, so it's best to limit your consumption of these types of foods.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Vegetables and other plants include two forms of carotenoids called Lutein and Zeaxanthin. They absorb light energy to avoid damage, particularly from powerful rays known as blue light. Studies found that treating Lutein and Zeaxanthin can help slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration.

According to research, certain environmental factors have a larger effect on Myopia's development and/or progression than diet and nutrition. However, it's essential to consider your diet's role in the overall health of your eyes. Adopt healthy habits to promote optimal eye health and slow down the progression of myopia. Regular eye exams are also crucial for detecting and managing Myopia.
